Sacred Heart Health System Plans to Add Ascension Identity to the Sacred Heart Name
Posted: 10/24/2017

PENSACOLA, Fla. (Oct. 24, 2017) – Sacred Heart Health System will add Ascension to its name as part of a national effort to make it clearer and easier for patients to access the care they need and to navigate their health. In moving toward a unified name, Sacred Heart Health System will change its name to Ascension Sacred Heart and adopt the Ascension logo.

By creating more consistent names for its facilities and services across the country, Ascension will better connect every aspect of care and innovation across its hospitals and other sites of care.

Sacred Heart has been part of Ascension for 18 years. Ascension is the nation’s leading nonprofit health system, with 2,500 sites of care and 36,000 providers in 22 states and Washington, D.C.

“Working together as part of Ascension has enabled Sacred Heart to improve the care we provide by bringing the knowledge and resources of thousands of medical professionals across the country to our own physicians and caregivers,” said Susan Davis, president and CEO of Sacred Heart Health System. “Adding the Ascension name to our own reflects the strength of being part of this national network.”

Patients will continue to see the doctor they know and trust, but that physician is connected to other experts and specialists across the state and across the country, all dedicated to providing care specific to their individual needs.

“But some important things will not change,” Davis said. “We will continue to draw from the heritage and the mission that were established more than 100 years ago when the Daughters of Charity came to Pensacola to build a hospital. In fact, the Daughters of Charity are one of the founders of Ascension.”

Innovations made possible through Sacred Heart’s work as part of Ascension will enable patients and their families to connect with their caregivers when, where and how they need it. Ascension continues to develop ways to improve care in locations that are convenient and accessible, as well launching online physician visits available 24 hours a day.

“The patients and families we serve have high expectations for excellent, personalized care delivered easily and conveniently,” said Nick Ragone, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for Ascension. “By creating consistent names across Ascension facilities and services nationwide, we’re making it easier for patients to access the care they need and expanding our efforts to deliver high-quality, affordable care for everyone with special attention to those most in need.”
Sacred Heart joins Ascension systems in six other states in beginning the move to a unified name, which will take place within the next year. Leaders at Sacred Heart and Ascension are just beginning to assess the signage and other elements to be changed during the transition period.

Last September, Ascension’s facilities in Michigan and Wisconsin became the first to adopt the Ascension name.

Innovation and Community Outreach

Over the past few years, Sacred Heart and Ascension have made major investments in Northwest Florida to bring new healthcare services and convenient options that allow consumers to more easily get the care they need. Here are a few examples:

• With Ascension support, Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast completed a $30 million expansion of its childbirth facilities and Emergency Department, along with a space for a future Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

• Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast also received funds with Ascension’s assistance for GetWellNetwork technology for educating patients at key points in their hospital stay. The system includes videos customized to their needs of each patient.

• Thanks to funding support from Ascension as well as millions of dollars in donations from the community, Sacred Heart is currently building a new Studer Family Children’s Hospital on its Pensacola campus. The new hospital will open in 2019.

• Working with Ascension, Sacred Heart just launched Sacred Heart Online Care, which allows consumers to make an online visit to a physician or nurse practitioner at any time of day or night.

• With federal research funds obtained by Ascension, Sacred Heart on the Emerald Coast also participated in a program to develop a better model of obstetrical care, based on evidence-based practices, to improve birth outcomes for mothers and newborns.

Sacred Heart Health System serves the Gulf Coast between Apalachicola, Fla. and Gulf Shores, Ala. The hub of the Sacred Heart system is its 566-bed Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. The facilities in Pensacola include The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart, a Level II Trauma Center, a Cancer Center affiliated with MD Anderson Cancer Network, and the area’s leading Maternity Center. The Health System also includes Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast, a 79-bed community hospital near Destin, Sacred Heart Hospital on the Gulf, a 19-bed hospital in Port St. Joe, Fla.
