“Advice for Seniors Living Alone” Topic of Mar. 7 Healthy Living Seminar
Posted: 2/27/2017

MIRAMAR BEACH, FLA. (February 27, 2017) -- The Senior Spirit organization of Sacred Heart Hospital is sponsoring a Healthy Living Seminar titled: “Advice for Seniors Living Alone.” This free seminar teaches seniors how to help ensure prompt life-saving treatment by first responders in the event of a medical crisis. The presentation will feature a speaker from the Institute for Senior Professionals (ISP) of Northwest Florida State College on Tuesday, March 7, at 10:00 AM

The talk grows out of a study done by the ISP which focused primarily on seniors who may be living alone (or perhaps living with a disabled spouse). As of 2014, there were over 41,000 seniors over 65 in Okaloosa and Walton Counties. Of these roughly 11,000 were living alone. Many, if not most, of the over-65 group might consider themselves reasonably healthy. However, county data shows that in 2014, there were over 10,000 emergency 911 calls originating from this group - including those seniors living alone.

Speed of treatment is critical in a medical crisis and may save a life. The speaker will address three life-saving measures for seniors in the event of a stroke or other disabling medical crisis: How to summon help when unable to reach the phone, how to assure first responders can promptly get into a home when they arrive, and how to assure first responders can readily have access to essential medical or other information when the senior is unconscious or otherwise unable to provide it.

This free Healthy Living seminar will be held in Sacred Heart Hospital’s Resource Center, Suite 3 Conference Room. Call (850) 278-3600 to register.
