Childbirth & Baby Basics Class
Whether you are expecting your first child or are looking for a refresher course, our Childbirth and Baby Basics Class will help you and your support person prepare for your baby’s’ birth and know what to expect – both physically and emotionally – on delivery day.
This class uses lectures, discussion, videos, posters and hands-on practice to increase your knowledge and decrease anxiety that you may be feeling about the birthing process. Topics include the signs and stages of labor, relaxation and coping techniques, warning signs to watch for during pregnancy, medical interventions, Cesarean birth and the care of your newborn during the first two weeks of life, from infant safety and sleep to diapering and bathing. Both natural birth and pain-management options will be discussed, and a member of our anesthesiology team will attend classes as available to provide greater detail about epidurals. Our support-team section of the class will cover a partner's role in both the labor process and the care of your baby.
Please wear clothing comfortable for light activity. A one-hour lunch break will be given. Lunch is not provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own lunch, eat in the cafeteria or try one of our nearby restaurants. Snacks and drinks are also welcome. Tours are available after class, pending availability on the unit.
Cost: $50 per couple. See class dates and register here.
Breastfeeding is one of the best gifts a mother and baby can give to each other, providing significant health benefits for mom, as well as the vitamins, nutrients and disease-fighting substances your baby needs for each stage of development. The American Academy of Pediatrics recognizes breastfeeding as the best method of feeding and nurturing infants. While breastfeeding is natural, it is also a learned skill for a new mother and baby. This two-hour class, taught by one of Sacred Heart Hospital’s lactation consultants, teaches techniques for breastfeeding success and addresses common concerns to make your experience as smooth as possible. Partners are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Cost: $20 per couple. See class dates and register here.
Friends & Family Infant CPR Class
This American Heart Association course includes training in infant CPR, first aid for a child who is choking and basic first aid skills. Our certified instructors will demonstrate how to perform each technique, including how far back to tilt your baby’s head and how much pressure to apply during CPR. Each participant will receive a “CPR for Friends and Family” booklet.
Cost: $22 per person. See class dates and register here.
